Many drivers shopping all-electric crossovers are comparing the 2023 Ford Mustang Mach-E vs 2023 Hyundai IONIQ 5. The Mustang Mach-E is really one of the first production EVs from one of the major automakers. It is also a crossover and premiered long before most other electric crossovers made it to market. Consumers now have the option of IONIQ 5, which has a similar starting MSRP and which has been getting almost as much critical acclaim as its Mustang-inspired counterpart. Ford offers its EV in five core trim levels—Select, Premium, California Route 1, GT and GT Performance—and Hyundai offers its EV in four core trim levels, which are the SE Standard Range, SE, SEL and Limited.
Both the 2023 Ford Mustang Mach-E and 2023 Hyundai IONIQ 5 are compact crossover SUVs with four doors and a rear liftgate. The wheelbase of the Ford is 5.7 inches compared to 6.1 inches with the Hyundai. The Mustang Mach-E has a 117.5-inch wheelbase and a 186.0-inch overall length, which is exactly 15.5 feet. The IONIQ 5 wheelbase is 118.1 inches, and its length is 182.5 inches. Alloy wheels are standard in both cases. Ford offers 18-, 19- and 20-inch wheels. Hyundai offers 19- and 20-inch wheels.
The 2023 Hyundai IONIQ 5 and 2023 Ford Mustang Mach-E are both five-passenger vehicles. Headroom is comparable in both rows. Legroom is greater in the Ford by almost 2 inches. Second-row legroom is greater in the Hyundai by more than an inch, but Mustang Mach-E provides plenty for adults at more than 38 inches. What Ford does really is the dedicated cargo space at nearly 30 cubic feet, and the Hyundai is also quite respectable at about 27 cubic feet. The standard cabin is a bit more upscale in the Ford. It has a larger touch screen and synthetic leather rather than cloth seating, and both automakers offer options like heated and ventilated seating and a premium audio system.
Both the 2023 Ford Mustang Mach-E available at Stivers Ford Montgomery and the 2023 Hyundai IONIQ 5 give you the option of rear-wheel and all-wheel drive. RWD models have one electric motor. AWD models have two electric motors and thus less EPA-estimated when comparing across comparable battery packs. Ford offers between 224 and 312 miles of EPA-estimated range. Hyundai offers between 220 and 303 miles of range. The range therefore is quite similar. But performance is higher with the Ford. The least performance available with the IONIQ 5 is 168 horsepower and 258 pound-feet of torque compared to 266 hp and 317 lb.-ft. with the Mustang Mach-E. Likewise, the strongest Ford makes 480 hp and 634 lb.-ft. compared to 320 hp and 446 lb.-ft. with the Hyundai model.
The base infotainment and driver-assistance packages when comparing the 2023 Ford Mustang Mach-E vs 2023 Hyundai IONIQ 5 are quite similar. But the package offered through Stivers Ford Montgomery stands out in a number of ways, including the larger touch screen—15.5 vs 12.3 inches—and the superior Sync 4 software.
