If you’re in the market for a full-size pickup, then you may be comparing the 2023 Ford F-150 vs 2023 Ram 1500. The 2023 Ford F-150 available at Stivers Ford Montgomery is the best-selling vehicle in North America, and that has been the case for this model for many decades. The 2023 Ram 1500 is not as popular but it has gained ground on competitors like the Silverado 1500 and Sierra 1500 due to critical acclaim regarding its ride comfort, which is achieved through a unique rear suspension design. The F-150 is offered in six trim levels aimed at the average consumer: XL, XLT, Lariat, King Ranch, Platinum and Limited. The Ram 1500 is offered in five: Tradesman, Big Horn, Laramie, Longhorn and Limited.
The 2023 Ford F-150 is available in three cab configurations: a regular cab, an extended cab and crew cab. Ram has discontinued its two-door regular cab for the 2023 Ram 1500. It does still offer it via the Ram 1500 Classic, but that is based on the previous platform and thus has none of the ride comfort improvements. Ford offers three bed lengths: a 5.5-foot short box, a 6.5-foot standard box and an 8-foot long box. The regular cab and extended cab are available with either the standard or long bed, and the crew cab is available with either the standard or short bed. Ram offers a 6.3-foot standard bed and a 5.6-foot short bed. The quad cab is paired exclusively with the standard bed, and the crew cab gives you the choice of bed.
You’ll definitely want to see the new 2023 Ford F-150 cabin if you haven’t yet as the design and build quality is arguably best in class. The 2023 Ram 1500 is no slouch in that regard either. As for interior spaciousness, it’s important to know that the automakers take difference approaches. Ford seeks the right balance between front and rear legroom whereas Ram emphasizes the rear seat. That is why the Ford models have more front legroom by 3 inches and more front headroom too. The Ram extended has 2.1 inches more legroom. The Ram crew has 1.6 inches more, but we think the Ford is plenty roomy at 33.5 inches for the extended and 43.6 inches for the crew.
Rear-wheel drive is standard and four-wheel drive is optional with both models, but Ford offers more options overall. A V6 engine is standard with both the F-150 and Ram 1500, but Ford also gives you the option of two turbocharged V6. Ford and Ram both offer a V8, but the Ford V8 has the better output. Ford also offers the higher maximum tow rating—14,000 vs 12,750 pounds—and you’ll find that the numbers are better with the Ford earlier in the lineup, which is where most drivers shop.
Ram still includes a small 5-inch touch screen with its base trim. It does offer a larger screen, but Stivers Ford Montgomery includes that 8-inch screen standard with the base XL. Ford offers the more sophisticated advanced trailering-assistance technologies with Ram’s arguably being the leanest out of any of the competitors. Ford also offers more standard driver assists, including basic features that Ram requires you to add as an option, such as automatic high-beam headlamps, forward collision mitigation and lane departure warning.
